Japan Industrial Production Decreased by 7.5% in MoM in January 2024

Industrial production in Japan declined by 7.5% month-over-month in January 2024, worse than market forecasts of a 7.3% fall and swinging from a 1.4% growth a month earlier, flash data showed. It was the steepest decrease in industrial output since May 2020, mainly dragged down by motor vehicles (-17.8% vs 1.1% in December), general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (-12.6% vs 9.2%), and electrical machinery, and information and communication electronics equipment (-8.3% vs 3.9%). Yearly, industrial output fell by 1.5% in January, the third straight month of contraction, after a 1.0% drop in December.
