According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment therefore fell by 29,000 (-0.1%) compared with the previous month. In the period from January to July 2026, employment decreased by an average of 20,000 people month on month.

According to results of the labour force survey, 1.86 million people were unemployed in August 2026. This was an increase of 120,000, or 6.9%, compared with August 2025. At 4.3%, the unemployment rate was higher than a year earlier (August 2025: 3.9%).
