After the referendum held on 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom (UK) notified its decision to leave the EU on 29 March 2017 and Brexit took place on 31 January 2020. Negotiations for the signing of a new Trade Agreement that will shape the relations between the EU and the UK in the new period were completed on 24 December 2020, the said Agreement was put into effect on 1.1.2021 provisionally and entered into force on 1 May 2021.
In parallel with the aforementioned process, as a result of the negotiations between our country and the UK, the Free Trade Agreement between Turkey and the United Kingdom was signed on 29.12.2020. The Agreement, which started to be implemented as of 1.1.2021 in terms of preferential treatment in trade, entered into force on 20 April 2021.
