World Trade Organization (WTO) 3rd Quarter Information Note

23 December 2021

The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced 3rd quarter global trade statistics. According to this note;

Global goods trade volume (quantity) decreased by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter after four consecutive quarters of strong expansion. Supply chain outages, a shortage of production inputs and increasing COVID-19 cases are the main reasons for this outcome.

Global trade volume increased by 11.9% for the year-to-date through September. (WTO estimate for the first 3 quarters was 12.7%). The WTO expects a 10.8% increase in merchandise trade for 2021 and states that its expectations for the year-over-year remain unchanged, despite the fact that the third quarter figures released were somewhat lower.
