U.S total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 263,000 in September, and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent September, returning to its July level. The number of unemployed persons edged down to 5.8 million in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reportedon Friday. Notable job gains occurred in hospitality and in health care. The labor force participation rate was little changed at 62.3 percent in September, and the employment-population ratio was unchanged at 60.1 percent.
