Roughly 45.5 million persons resident in Germany were in employment in January 2026 (national concept). According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment therefore fell again (-14,000; 0.0%) compared with the previous month. In the period from May to December 2025, it was down by an average of 12,000 month on month.
Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed in January 2026 stood at 1.75 million, which was an increase of 6,000 on December 2025 (0.4%). The adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.0%.
