Industrial production in Japan declined by 6.7% month-over-month in January 2024, It was the steepest decrease in industrial output since May 2020, mainly dragged down by motor vehicles (-15.9% vs 0.3% in December), general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (-10.8% vs 6.4%), and electrical machinery, and information and communication electronics equipment (-7.6% vs 2.1%). Yearly, industrial output fell by 1.5% in January, the third straight month of contraction, after a 1.1% drop in December.
