The number of Americans filling for unemployment benefits increased by 70 thousand to 281 thousand in the week ended March 14 from the previous week's unrevised level of 211 thousand and well above market expectations of 220 thousand. This was the highest level for initial claims since September 2, 2017 when it was 299 thousand.
