Robust Domestic Demand Lifts U.S. Trade Deficit To Record High

The trade deficit increased 5.6% to an all-time high of $74.4 billion in March, the Commerce Department said on Tuesday. Imports soared 6.3% to a historic $274.5 billion in March. Exports surged 6.6% to $200.0 billion. Despite the widening of the trade deficit, the economy grew at a 6.4% annualized rate in the first quarter, the second-fastest gross domestic product growth pace since the third quarter of 2003.
